Squid Ink takes on Sylvie and Bruno
Squid Ink takes on Sylvie and Bruno

I know I’ve read Sylvie and Bruno by Lewis Carroll and I have a memory of the book, it’s a very shameful memory considering I love linking pre-loved books with new owners. I can tell you what it’s about but that’s only by looking at the Wikipedia page. It seems it’s a social novel and discusses issues that would have been relevant and discussed at the time of writing (1867). So, there you go, not one of his better known books but still very important.

I’m going to confess to why I have a shameful memory of this book. When I was fairly young, I was reading it in bed. I must have fallen asleep at some point as I remember waking up and pulling a page out of the book so it could act as a bookmark for when I woke up in the morning. Waking up in the morning and remembering this was horrifying and it took me a while before I could actually check the book and discover it was something I really had done. I was very careful to stick the page back in and a while ago I confessed to my Mum and sisters one of whom promptly got the book and proved it was the very same copy as I opened it very quickly to the right page and sure enough it was stuck in with sticky tape. I was mortified.

What is your most shameful memory of a book? Don’t be shy, share it here with us.
