Always an interesting thing to do as there are so many ways this could go wrong. Let me count the ways…actually let me not count as that sounds very much like maths, maths and I are not good friends.

As parents we speak for our children and try to back off and let them speak for themselves more and more as they get older, what if we’re wrong? If they’re babies or toddlers? Not much problem if they’re babies, could be tricky if they’re going through the terrible twos when they don’t always know what they want and don’t have the language skills to tell us we’re wrong…leading to…tantrums! Awesome stuff!

When we’re older it can also be tricky. I’d like to say it’s ok if you’re head of an organisation and you’ve had conferences with everyone in the organisation but there’s always someone who disagrees with the outcomes of conferences and meetings and doesn’t say anything until they’re in public. On the other hand there’s always someone who disagrees with everything anyone says and we just say those people are ‘ornery’, a little used word which fits these people perfectly.

When I saw my friend Olga on Nerdalicious say “Every fantasy and science-fiction fan loves a good cover.” I saw a shade of pink verging on red. She has a problem saying things like this as I never even considered looking at covers until she started posting photos of covers and drooling over them. I tend to look at the author, or the description or go by other people’s recommendation rather than even glancing at the covers, except to eliminate it as romance. And, it’s art, so what excites one person will anger someone else, art is very subjective and I tend not to understand it much so it’s no wonder I’ve never worried about cover art. I’m wondering if I really am one of those ornery folk I mentioned before.

This brings to mind a conversation I had with Chuck of Notions Unlimited about cover art but that’s a topic for another day.

  1. I could have said “most”, but everyone I know likes book cover art. We don’t usually get illustrations on the inside with fantasy books. If you’re a fastidious book lover you also worry about collection in matching covers and size.
You’re a Pratchett fan, you must be spoiled. Take a look at the American covers VS Paul Kidby.

Ornery is a fantastic word, I used it the other day.

    1. It’s just a wording thing and I’m only being picky about the wording. I agree some book collectors worry about getting matching covers and size but not me, my Christie books are all over the place with the only match being they’re almost all paperback and pre-loved.

But I don’t buy Pratchetts for the covers despite being totally brilliant.

Good, glad to see it in use!
