My brilliantly aptly named new series continues. Where I randomly select two books from my shelves and attempt to find a link. I do not promise it will be a good link, only that it will be a link. It might be anything at all. One thing I do promise is that the link will not be due to the books both containing words such as ‘and’ or ‘the’, although having said that it’d be really awesome to now find two books totally missing both of those words.

The books I chose last week were I Am Legend by Richard Matheson and Gods of Riverworld by Philip José Farmer. I’ve even put in photos and links in case you want to either look at them or buy them. If you don’t want to look at the covers you have problems.

The Books

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson is a apocalyptic novel about a virus causing people to become vampires. It’s one of those classic novels you should read if you’re into vampires. And if you’re excited by Will Smith you should watch the movie, he has a great dog, too.

Gods of Riverworld is one of the great Riverworld saga by Philip José Farmer. If you’re into sweeping science fiction sagas this is one for you. The basic premise of this series is that every human who ever lived between 99,000 BCE and 2,200 CE have been resurrected on a world called Riverworld. Several well-known people are travelling on a boat up the river to try and find out why, in this book they are inside the tower.

The Link

Today the link is an opposite. In Gods of Riverworld all of society between two dates are alive while in I Am Legend only one man is alive. So, in the José Farmer book it’s some kind of living as people can still be killed but are resurrected the very next day somewhere else on the river and have to start life afresh. Matheson tells us there is only one man alive but then goes onto look at some of the vampires who seem to be alive, at least their chests move while they sleep and that appears to be life.

Next Week!

Next week we have The Drums Go Bang by Ruth Park and D’Arcy Niland and The Curse of the Lazy Lover by Erle Stanley Gardner. Stay tuned to find out if I’ve actually got a link. I promise I’ll try to be entertaining.
