My brilliantly aptly named new series continues. Where I randomly select two books from my shelves and attempt to find a link. I do not promise it will be a good link, only that it will be a link. It might be anything at all. One thing I do promise is that the link will not be due to the books both containing words such as ‘and’ or ‘the’, although having said that it’d be really awesome to now find two books totally missing both of those words.

The books I chose last week were The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. LeGuin and The Snow Queen by Joan D. Vinge. Stay tuned to find out if I’ve actually got a link.

The Books

The Lathe of Heaven is an insightful book looking at the world of overpopulation and the idea of colour. Not colour in nature but the colour of people. One passage I looked at just now showed how for some people their colour is what makes them the person they are and if all of a sudden everyone was the same colour then it would be as if these people had not been born.

The Snow Queen is one of books I got through a book club many, many years ago. I mentioned it briefly here a couple of years ago and in that time I still haven’t managed to read it. Instead I found this blog which reviews books and just happens to have used a few words to tell us that this is a really important book for its time. I’m going to add it to my To Be Read metreage and one day I’ll get to it.

The Link

One little link today. And it’s all about killing swathes of the population. In The Lathe of Heaven Doctor Haber finds he has delusions of grandeur and has his patient solve the population problem. He puts George under hypnosis, he has a dream, and when he wakes up huge proportions of the population is now gone thanks to a plague. In The Snow Queen the ruler, Arienrhod, finds her plans for continued world domination have gone slightly awry so she changes plans to include genocide.

Next Week!

Shouldn’t have a problem with next week as I’ve somehow picked up Weasel Words by Don Watson and People, Parliament and Politics by Walter Jona. Stay tuned to find out if I’ve actually got a link. I promise I’ll try to be entertaining.
