This is the last post in my American odyssey. “Finally”, I hear you say. I know it’s been a long journey and for that I apologise. This week we return to our regularly unscheduled programming, but only after I tell you about Providence. I reserve the right to continue putting some photos from our trip on Friday Photos.
Providence, Rhode Island was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, it is a beautiful city with only about 170,000 inhabitants and one night while we were there it looked as if all of them were out in force, I was told there were many, many visitors as Waterfire is a drawcard and I can totally understand it.
Waterfire is a fantastic celebration, the basics are 80-something stanchions erected in the middle of the river and on Waterfire night they are filled with logs and set alight. They have lovely music, lots of food stalls and other entertainment happening, for Melbourne residents I suggest you think of Moomba but it’s a lot classier. There’s actually a mini event this Wednesday and you can see the details on their website.
We did manage to see a lot more of Providence than just Waterfire but apart from the Diana Ross concert this was the main highlight. We were staying opposite the State House and tried to spend the morning there before our train but it turned out to be closed for the public holiday.
