One of the outings we did from Port Fairy was a short drive to Tower Hill. It’s the best place I’ve found to see Emus, they’re to be found all over the place and you have to be careful as they’ll try to pinch your lunch. There’s a trick to getting rid of them and it helps to be tall, so if you’re not grab something to make you look taller and just stand near them…they’ll walk away.

Thank you National Geographic for making a good video of the area. They’re well known for providing really good information, but in this case you need to watch out for the Indigenous guide, he’s hysterical. And here’s a link to their channel.

We spent a lot of time trying to get really good photos of the Superb Fairy Wren, this is a male all dressed up trying to impress the female.

I was happily photographing the two emus in front as was another photographer about six feet to my left when someone suggested we look out between us. Sure enough, in that small gap this other emu walked between us.

This speck in the tree is a Koala. They spend most of the day sleeping in crooks of trees and they can be hard to spot 15 foot up. I was quite surprised to see a video a friend took also in Tower Hill only a day or so later of a Koala happily walking through the place.

This is a view of the lake in Tower Hill. The whole area is volcanic although it hasn’t erupted in 25,000 years. Sometimes you can look down and pick up a large, light lump of volcanic rock just as a reminder that it really did explode.

Another view in Tower Hill. The weather that day was typical Melbourne weather, cloudy then clear and the photos reflect that.

Amenities in the reserve are a really good information centre with lots of souvenirs and ice creams, a picnic ground with BBQs and some toilets but I didn’t visit so I have no idea how clean the toilets are. There are various walks of varying difficulty, we did two that day with lunch sandwiched in the middle. Another warning about the Emus, they’re all through the picnic ground and you might come across them on the tracks.

And to finish up I took a video of the Emu.
