Curse of Bronze by Tansy Rayner Roberts

Suzie Eisfelder

This is the first book in The Family Cursebreakers series. It came in the mail earlier this year because I back Roberts on Patreon and as part of that I receive various items in the mail including some books. It gives me the excitement of knowing I’m helping keep an author financial so she has the luxury of being able to write, and it gives me the added excitment to be able to create unboxings for my YouTube channel. It’s a lovely little book and I very much enjoyed reading it.

Set in a world with curses that actually work and people who can break those curses. Charlotte Hathaway is cursed and the custody of her house is transferred to her niece, Bella. It’s something the house has decided and Bella finds out about the transfer when the key appears in the first paragraph.

The worldbuilding is really great. And there were a couple of things that stood out to make it work well for me, although I only made note of one of them.

Bella is soaked and she’s taking a cab back home. The driver laughs when she shows concern for the leather seats. Apparently blood wipes right off Minotaur leather, a drop of water won’t harm the upholstery. What a world this is that uses Minotaur skin in their cabs.

The other thing I noted is about the museum discussion. I’ve recently been watching a documentary series about Stuff the British Stole. It discusses artefacts found in various countries around the world which ended up in museums in England, and sometimes Australia. A lack of cultural respect for these other countries was discussed many times throughout the series. In this book Bella talks about cultural respect and speculates about the thirty gargoyles which are no longer in museums. She’s got good values.

I love the use of the name ‘Bella’. It’s such a good book it should make those Bellas who have been feeling shamed by Twilight feel better. She’s such a nice person in this book. But I’d never be political like that.

Join other readers in finding out who cursed Charlotte and enjoy a cozy fantasy novella. At only 120 pages it’s a nice short read.
