Randomly Shelves or Something

Suzie Eisfelder

My brilliantly aptly named new series continues. Where I randomly select two books from my shelves and attempt to find a link. I do not promise it will be a good link, only that it will be a link. It might be anything at all. One thing I do promise is that the link will not be due to the books both containing words such as ‘and’ or ‘the’, although having said that it’d be really awesome to now find two books totally missing both of those words.

The books I chose last week were Phonology by Philip Carr and The Australian Journal of Language and Literacy May 1997 edited by Michèle Anstey. Stay tuned to find out if I’ve actually got a link.

The Books

Phonology is more of a textbook than anything else. It’s about modern linguistics and should prove very interesting when I finally get around to opening it. The text appears to be aimed at students who are not studying linguistics and may not take their studies further. It’s to be used as part of a 10 week course.

The Australian Journal of Language and Literacy May 1997 is just one volume from a journal directed at literacy educators. No, I don’t consider myself an educator but I’m interested in literacy and language.

The Link

The link today is language. Phonology is the organisation of sounds in language. The principles can be applied to many different types of languages. The journal gives us articles on language and literacy, with one articles about the building blocks of language. With phonology being about consonants and vowels you have two books about the building blocks of language.

Next Week!

Next week but I’ll do my best or worst. We’ve got The Ascent of Everest by John Hunt and Eyeless in Gaza by Aldous Huxley. I’ve taken both books from my To Be Read pile so there’s the added challenge there of finding a link when I’ve not read either of them.
