Randomly Shelves or Something

Suzie Eisfelder

My brilliantly aptly named new series continues. Where I randomly select two books from my shelves and attempt to find a link. I do not promise it will be a good link, only that it will be a link. It might be anything at all. One thing I do promise is that the link will not be due to the books both containing words such as ‘and’ or ‘the’, although having said that it’d be really awesome to now find two books totally missing both of those words.

The books I chose last week were Bowie by Jerry Hopkins and My Strange Friend by David Martin. Stay tuned to find out if I’ve actually got a link.

The Books

Bowie by Jerry Hopkins. I scribbled a few words about this book back in 2014 you can read more about it there but I’ll use up a handful of words here. This book only goes up to 1985 and it’s unauthorised, I don’t know if that means Bowie read it and decided it wasn’t authorised or if he hasn’t read it. I enjoyed the book and it might be out of print so finding a copy to read might be a little challenging unless, like me, you prefer pre-loved books.

My Strange Friend by David Martin. I’ve not read this book. I do pick them up at random and this is a good illustration of my randomness. It’s also a good illustration that I share the bookshelves with other people and I haven’t read everything they have…yet. It’s the life of David Martin who settled in Australia in 1949 or 1950 with multiple languages and some very good writing skills. He’s submitted articles to publications such as Overland and Meanjin but has also had 40 books published including this one.

The Link

The link is getting more and more tenuous. Bowie is a biography while My Strange Friend is an autobiography. They both wrote although Bowie wrote songs and Martin wrote books and articles. They were both very talented. And they’re both on my shelf! But that last one is really not a link at all.

Next Week!

Next week but I’ll do my best or worst. We’ve got Disgrace by J. M. Coetzee and The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie. Stay tuned to find out if I’ve actually got a link. I promise I’ll try to be entertaining.
