Randomly Shelves or Something

Suzie Eisfelder

My brilliantly aptly named new series continues. Where I randomly select two books from my shelves and attempt to find a link. I do not promise it will be a good link, only that it will be a link. It might be anything at all. One thing I do promise is that the link will not be due to the books both containing words such as ‘and’ or ‘the’, although having said that it’d be really awesome to now find two books totally missing both of those words.

The books I chose last week were My Brother Jack by George Johnston and Penelope Bungles to Broome by Tim Bowden. Stay tuned to find out if I’ve actually got a link.

The Books

I scribbled a few words about My Brother Jack back in November. It’s one of those books that are absolutely important for everyone to read. It gives a good understanding of how people coped with the Depression in the 1930s and is written in a very down-to-earth manner. There’s a link in the photo should you wish to buy it and add a few cents to my retirement fund.

Penelope bungles to Broome is  a different type of book about Australia. It’s probably something I should be dipping into to see how Bowden has written about various places. Why? Because that’s what we’re doing in Creative Non-Fiction at the moment.

The Link

I promise the link today is better than that both books are Australian, and better than that both books were on my shelf. Promise.

The link today is that of travel. The man in the title, Jack, travels during the Depression in order to try and find work. His brother, David, travels for work as he ends up as a reporter. They both have a rather different experience of their travels. Tim Bowden travels around Australia with his wife, he makes this is work by writing about it publishing this book.

Next Week!

Next week but I’ll do my best or worst. We’ve got Letters from Burma by Aung San Suu Kyi and Aurealis 44: Australian Fantasy & Science Fiction edited by Stuart Mayne. Stay tuned to find out if I’ve actually got a link. I promise I’ll try to be entertaining.
