Paratalk or Torque?

Suzie Eisfelder

Moving on with the article whereby I take a paragraph from a book and examine it in whatever detail works.

Fraffly Well Spoken is the follow up book to the ever famous Lets Stalk Strine. If you’ve never heard of Professor Afferbeck Lauder then I suggest you head directly to your favourite search engine. Lauder is a very important linguist and a must read whatever your specialty.

‘Ah, stmermen turl chepp. Staffer look n’ see. Hmmm…Yes, good. Wheshell we meet?’

As you can see this is a conversation between two people. It looks like a foreign language and in actual fact it is. It is the language of London’s West End. I’m sure you don’t have to be born there to be able to understand it, but let’s just say I’m struggling.

I have a love/hate relationship with Professor Lauder. He does insist on writing his books phonetically as if one totally understands every single sound and nuance of the local language. A more talented linguist you won’t find, just a challenge for regular readers to read and understand. Sadly, I’m a regular reader.
