A Town Like Alice - Nevil Shute

Nevil Shute combines adventure, enterprise and romance in this story. The result is that A Town Like Alice is one of the most pleasant and happy stories he has ever given us.

This is the story of a girl who had a head as well as a heart; Jean Paget is the most fully drawn of all Nevil Shute’s heroines.  Her adventures in Malaya have to be read to be believed.  It was a queer time to fall in love, and though her Australian soldier was afterwards separated from her by half the world, they eventually met in a town like Alice Springs.

Jean got to work with a vengeance on the Australian ‘outback’ station.  Readers will hope against hope that her crocodile shoe factory, her bathing pool and beauty parlour will win the success they deserve.  And quite apart from this there is her own personal love affair.

This hardcover volume was published by William Heinemann in 1954 (originally published in 1950).  The book itself has some age spotting on the outer edges, a name written inside and some stains inside the cover. The dustjacket has been taped up, there was no damage, it’s just that the owner put tape along the top and bottom and then taped the dustjacket to the book. While the tape has protected the book from most other damage it has left a residue which is not good.
