Midnight is a Place - Joan Aiken
Product Information Midnight is a Place - Joan Aiken
In Midnight is a Place, Joan Aiken returns to the nineteenth century and the Yorkshire setting of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase.
This is the story of the solitary boy, Lucas Bell, who lives in Midnight Court, a crumbling mansion on the outskirts of the town of Blastburn. The eve of his thirteenth birthday brings Lucas a companion who at first seems nothing but a bitter disappointment - she is a small, wilful French girl, Anna-Marie Murgatroyd, who speaks no English. But her history turns out to be curiously connected with Midnight Mill, the carpet factory from which Sir Randolph, Lucas's guarian, derives his wealth. The death of Sir Randolph in a fire which guts the mansion leaves Anna-Marie and Lucas destitute and friendless, obliged somehow to earn a living in the factory town. Their adventures in the streets and sewers of Blastburn, and finally in Midnight Mill itself, make a story which is sometimes sad, sometimes frightening, but always exciting. In the end they do not recover all their lost wealth, but by this time better and more important things have happened to them.
