Articles include:

  • Abraham's Ur:  Is the Pope Going to the Wrong Place?:  To celebrate the new millennium, Pope John Paul II has planned a whirlwind tour of Biblical sites, including one in Iraq.  Why Iraq?  Because Abraham was born there.  At least that's what people have claimed since the excavation of a site by that name in southern Iraq.  But a careful reading of Biblical and ancient texts indicates that this Ur might not be the patriarch's hometown after all.
  • Abraham's Ur:  Did Woolley Excavate the Wrong Place?:  Fame, fortune, a BBC radio show and knighthood were Sir Leonard Woolley's rewards for excavating Abraham's "birthplace" in the 1920s and '30s.  The spectacular finds are our prize.  The British archaeologist unearthed evidence of royal burials, mass suicides, a ziggurat, several temples, and hundreds of golden baubles, weapons and vessels.
  • Bethsaida Rediscovered:  It was one of the most important sites in Jesus' Galilean ministry, but for 2,000 years no one has known just where Bethsaida was.  That has changed, however, thanks to an international, multidisciplinary dig team that has found the city - but not where you might expect.
This magazine has little wear.
