Randomly Shelves or Something

My brilliantly aptly named new series continues. Where I randomly select two books from my shelves and attempt to find a link. I do not promise it will be a good link, only that it will be a link. It might be anything at all. One thing I do promise is that the link will not be due to the books both containing words such as ‘and’ or ‘the’, although having said that it’d be really awesome to now find two books totally missing both of those words.

The books I chose last week were Letters from Burma by Aung San Suu Kyi and Aurealis 44: Australian Fantasy & Science Fiction edited by Stuart Mayne. Stay tuned to find out if I’ve actually got a link.

The Books

I put together a few words about Letters From Burma back in 2014, it must be a good book as I’ve kept it on my shelf. It’s letters from the prominent politician and leader in Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, who paints a vivid and poignant picture of her native land. She cares for her country and it really shows through in these letters.

Aurealis 44: Australian Fantasy & Science Fiction is one of the best science fiction magazines around. In the photo I’ve linked to this magazine on their website so you can buy it yourself, it doesn’t contribute to my coffee fund as it’s not an affiliate link. Just to show how good the writing is I wrote some words about it back in 2011 and it’s still on my shelf.

The Link

I know that these books are really disparate but I think I do actually have a link. It’s about beleaguered people Aung San Suu Kyi is beleaguered in her own country, elected leader and unable to take up her position she was under house arrest for far too many years. While some of the stories in Aurealis have people who are under attack, I’m looking at the Tinkermen, at the slaves.

Next Week!

Next week but I’ll do my best or worst. We’ve got Medea and other plays by Euripides and The Agatha Christie Crossword Puzzle Book compiled by Randall Toye & Judith Hawkins Gaffney. Stay tuned to find out if I’ve actually got a link. I promise I’ll try to be entertaining.
